What It Is?

Hydrangea paniculata 'Fire & Ice' Tree Form (also sold as Hydrangea paniculata ‘Fire & Ice’ or Fire and Ice®) is a panicle hydrangea cultivar that can be trained into a small tree form or grown as a multi-stem shrub. It’s prized for its long blooming season and eye-catching color progression.

Appearance & Blooming

  • Flower Color Progression: Begins as creamy white in early summer, shifts to soft pink mid-season, and matures to deep burgundy/red by fall — hence the Fire & Ice name.

  • Foliage: Green leaves with reddish undertones provide interest throughout the growing season.

  • Flower Shape: Upright panicle clusters — great for cutting and long garden display.

Size & Growth

  • Mature Height: Typically about 3–5 ft (0.9–1.5 m) when grown as shrub/tree form, though in some settings it can be trained higher with pruning.

  • Spread: Approx. 3–4 ft (0.9–1.2 m) wide.

  • Growth Habit: Upright, slightly conical form with moderate growth rate.

Growing Conditions

  • USDA Zones: 3–8, making it very cold hardy.

  • Sun Exposure: Best in full sun to partial shade (morning sun with afternoon shade ideal in hot climates).

  • Soil: Prefers rich, well-drained soil with regular moisture but isn’t overly fussy.

  • Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially in establishment and during hot, dry periods.

Care & Maintenance

  • Pruning: Because it blooms on new wood (current season’s growth), prune in late winter to early spring to maintain shape and encourage blooms.

  • Mulching: Adding mulch helps conserve soil moisture and protect roots in winter.

  • Fertilizing: A balanced, slow-release fertilizer in spring can support strong growth.
